Acute Care Inpatient Rehab Coder

Schedule: Full - Time Regular

Ardent is looking for an Acute Care Inpatient coder with Rehab Coding experience to support our East Texas Division!  This is a REMOTE position or can be located in Tyler, TX.


We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as an Acute CareInpatient/Rehab Coder .  The coder will bring to the table proven experience in inpatient acute care and rehab coding, with the ability to complete the coding portion of the IRF-PAI. To achieve appropriate and timely reimbursement and data integrity the Acute Care/Inpatient Rehab Coder must ensure accurate and compliant application of correct coding principles for hospital services and participate in any acute care/rehab coding-related projects.

The Acute Care Inpatient/Rehab Coder is responsible for the following duties:

  • Assigning ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes for all types of acute inpatient cases.
  • Assigning ICD-10-CM codes on inpatient rehab cases.
  • Completing the coding portion of the IRF-PAI.
  • Works closely with the PPS Coordinator in assigning the Impairment Code.
  • Maintains at least a 95% accuracy rate.
  • Maintains average to high productivity based on UT Health Coding Productivity Standards.
  • Abstracting of facility required data in the electronic system.
  • Working applicable edits if needed.
  • Generate appropriate queries as needed.
  • Communication of issues to the Inpatient Coding Manager, as appropriate.
  • Thorough understanding of ICD-10-CM/PCS Official Coding Guidelines for Coding and Reporting and AHA Coding Clinic.
  • Thorough understanding of Medicare Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS), Medicare Severity-Diagnosis Related Groups (MS-DRGs).
  • Understanding of coding resources and tools.
  • Maintains continuing education (CE) requirements per UT Health policy.



  • Successful completion of a Medical Terminology, Anatomy and Physiology, and Pharmacology course.
  • Coding/HIM certification required (e.g. RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CPC).

Experience & Requirements:

  • Minimum of 2 years coding/abstracting experience in rehab inpatient coding. 
  • Experience with 3M, AS400, eRehab, OneChart and Medilinks a plus.
  • Computer and software skills, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, encoder/grouper.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills.
  • Organizational skills.
  • Leadership skills.
