Ardent is looking for Specialty Coders!  These positions can be located in Tulsa OK, Albuquerque NM, Amarillo, TX or remote.

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Specialty Coder. 

To achieve appropriate and timely reimbursement and data integrity, the Specialty Coder will work with Health Information Integrity (HII) review nurses, and physicians/providers in clarifying documentation, providing education and ensuring accurate and compliant application of correct coding principles for hospital cardiac services and other specialties. 

The Specialty Coder is responsible for the following duties:

  • Works with HII nurses, cardiology departments and cardiologists/providers on an ongoing basis to assist physicians/providers in complete and accurate documentation through concurrent processes, and where necessary, retrospective queries.

  • Serves as a subject matter expert to coders relative to cardiac and related diagnoses and procedures.

  • Assigns ICD-10 diagnosis and procedure codes and present on admission (POA) indicators.

  • Assigns CPT and HCPCS outpatient procedure codes and ICD-10-CM codes.

  • Maintains average productivity and quality standards based on Ardent Shared Coding standards.

  • Maintains at least a 95% accuracy rate.

  • Abstracts facility required data in the electronic system.

  • Accurately assigns Discharge Disposition status.

  • Works applicable edits as needed.

  • Communicates issues to the appropriate Coding Manager.

  • Thoroughly understands ICD-10 Official Coding Guidelines for Coding and Reporting and AHA Coding Clinic.

  • Thoroughly understands HCPCS/CPT coding systems and CPT Assistant and Coding Clinic for HCPCS guidelines.

  • Thoroughly understands Medicare Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS), Medicare Severity-Diagnosis Related Groups (MS-DRGs).

  • Thoroughly understands Medicare Outpatient Prospective Payment System (OPPS), Ambulatory Payment Classification (APC).

  • Understands coding resources and tools.

  • Acknowledges receipt and review of updated Ardent coding policies.

  • Maintains continuing education (CE) requirements per Ardent policy.


  • Successful completion of a Medical Terminology, Anatomy and Physiology, and Pharmacology course
  • Successful completion of an ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT/HCPCS coding training and/or classes
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Interventional Cardiology Coding guidelines
  • Bachelor’s degree in a health related profession, or Associate’s degree with relevant healthcare experience (equivalent to bachelor’s)
  • Coding credential required (RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CPC-H, CPC, etc.)

 Experience & Requirements:

  • Minimum 2 years coding with emphasis on cardiac services preferred with coding/abstracting experience in ICD-10-CM/PCS inpatient or outpatient coding
  • Advanced training in ICD-10
  • Computer and software skills, including Word, Excel, encoder/grouper
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including professional, team player, able to communicate well with others on all levels; pleasing personality; and positive
